Who is it for?

Who uses our service?

SCROLL DOWN

Who is it for?

Who uses our service?

Our service is for the one billion people around the world currently living without grid power. 750 million of these people already have access to a mobile phone, but do not have access to the electricity needed to charge it. Our service provides an accessible, affordable charging solution without the up-front cost of buying a personal solar panel.

Who can get our service? Communities with demand, sunshine and trust.

Who can get our service? Communities with demand, sunshine and trust.

Communities living completely off-grid are most suitable for the BuffaloGrid service, as demand in these communities is high. We use existing networks of trust to ensure these communities care for our equipment and respect our agents. These networks of trust exist in organisations with access to off-grid communities. We've worked with coffee growing cooperatives, credit unions, banking inclusion networks and mobile phone credit re-sellers.

Who started BuffaloGrid?

Our Founder, Phil Schluter, spent his childhood in Kenya. Phil runs a coffee company, Schluter S.A., that specialises in African gourmet coffee, and wants to "transform lives in Africa through commerce, in a mutually profitable way".

Phil founded BuffaloGrid because he witnessed how farmers in Sub-Saharan Africa were becoming owners of mobile phones, but charging their mobile phones was still a daily challenge. He brought this challenge to Daniel Becerra who, along with Damon Miller and Daniel Fogg, built a multi-disciplinary team to develop the BuffaloGrid service.

BuffaloGrid is based in London, UK. From here, our team of designers, developers and engineers are working to support our customers in the off-grid world.

Who will benefit?

Who benefits from BuffaloGrid?

Our customers benefit from greater business opportunities, better education prospects and a wealth of information provided by increased connectivity. Our agents, the people paid to operate the BuffaloGrid service, also benefit by the income generated by every charge. And companies using our service also benefit, as they can now trade with a previously unreachable market.

The first companies to benefit are mobile network operators, because phones with power use more airtime.

Mobile phone users benefit from having accessible electricity and connectivity. They can save money and time on phone charging, and have a  platform to access useful services from health care to banking.

BuffaloGrid Operators receive the equipment for free, and receive an income for distributing the service (commission per charge).

BuffaloGrid helps develop off grid communities in a more sustainable way. This power and connectivity provides a platform for people to trade with each other for the first time. It also helps change attitudes towards solar, which we hope encourages communities to see being environmentally considerate in a positive light.

Mobile network operators will benefit as they will receive new customers, and more airtime from existing users. The introduction of the internet leads to smartphones and future data allowances. They will also be able to use BuffaloGrid as a promotional tool, and see the results accurately.

BuffaloGrid is a business, not an NGO as we champion enterprise over aid. We think that a good way of reducing poverty is by enhancing commerce.

We have financed BuffaloGrid using equity investment and grant funding. Our equity investors are private angels excited about our service and the growth potential of our business. Our grant funding has come from InnovateUK, the UK’s innovation agency, and DFID, the UK Department for International Development (aka UK Aid), via the Global Village Energy Partnership.

In April 2016, we closed a successful equity crowdfunding campaign on CrowdCube. This campaign helped us raise £496,000 of equity investment from 351 investors based in 23 different countries.
