Why is connectivity so important?

Why is connectivity so important?

The mobile phone has reached even the most remote, low-income regions of the world. This has provided connectivity to millions of people, allow them to communicate with others and improving their economic and social prospects. This success is due to a simple business model: mobile providers build a cellular network and run an accessible service that everyone wants. We followed this example to provide our customers with power-as-a-service.

Why is getting power off-grid so hard?

Why is getting power off-grid so hard?

For people living off-grid, getting their phone charged can be frustrating. Charging a phone can waste one day every week. They must travel to the nearest charging station, which can mean a costly bus ride or hours of walking. Then they wait for their phones to charge, and sometimes do this twice a week.

Off-grid power is also expensive. Charging your phone five times off-grid, costs the same as a year using grid power.

BuffaloGrid is local, affordable power and connectivity, for off-grid people in rural areas.

Why power-as-a-service? Why not sell solar panels?

We believe people need access to power, not ownership of expensive, inefficient, or polluting power sources.

We don't sell solar panels because many people still can't afford them. This is one of the reasons why despite a strong need and good supply, solar panels have a very low share of the off-grid power market.

We give BuffaloGrid systems for free, and customers pay for power as they use it. These payments are processed using our cashless system, providing end-to-end accountability.

Being cashless helps reduce corruption in the system. It also makes billing and promotion possible, because BuffaloGrid knows exactly who receives the power. No other system has this mix of secure information and easy access, which we believe is the key to bringing mobile network operators into the power distribution market.

When we started BuffaloGrid, we looked at pedal power as a potential solution. But after running trials in Uganda, we realised this was not going to work. It was not inclusive, as it required our agents to cycle for hours in the heat. So we switched to solar power.

Solar power is a clean, sustainable solution that is safe, unlike fossil fuel, and doesn't require human exertion. Our customers also mostly live in countries close to the equator, where solar insolation is high.
